Panama was ruled by Colombia. TR supported the Panamanian Revolution
France attempted to dig the Panama Canal in the 1880's but failed (deadly disease, very expensive)
The US led project began in 1904 and was officially opened in 1914
US engineers used a system of locks (one on the Atlantic side, one on the Pacific) as well as damming the Gatun lake so ships go "up and over Panama"
